Scout Finch
Six years old and already arguing. She narrates the whole thing looking back, so she has to read as a child who misses nothing and understands about half of it.
Why Matilda Firth? Firth plays children who are watchful and unimpressed rather than cute, which is the whole difference between Scout and the sweeter child narrators she gets mistaken for.
Atticus Finch
The father, and the closest thing the town has to a conscience. Middle-aged and unhurried, courteous to people who have not earned it, harder to move than he looks.
Why Ethan Hawke? Hawke has spent twenty years playing decent men working out what they actually believe, and he carries the South without performing it.
Calpurnia
The Finches' cook, and the only person who reliably disciplines Scout. Carries herself differently depending on which part of town she is standing in, and the children notice.
Why Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor? Ellis-Taylor plays authority that has to be exercised carefully, and Calpurnia runs a household she has no standing in.
Tom Robinson
A young field hand accused of something he is physically incapable of having done. Gentle and careful on the stand, and entirely aware that being right will not be enough.
Why Jharrel Jerome? Jerome has already played gentleness under accusation in When They See Us, with the audience knowing exactly what is coming.
Mayella Ewell
Nineteen, raising seven siblings in a cabin behind the town dump, and the loneliest person in the book. Frightened on the stand and then furious, because accusing Tom is the only power anyone has ever handed her.
Why Sophia Lillis? Lillis plays wariness better than almost anyone her age, and Mayella has to be pitiable and dangerous in the same breath.
Boo Radley
The neighbor nobody has seen in fifteen years and the subject of every rumor the children repeat. Pale, watchful, and far kinder than the stories about him.
Why Ben Whishaw? Whishaw can carry a part on stillness alone, which is what you need from someone who gets two scenes and almost no dialogue.
